Semi Precious Stones VS Precious Stones

Things have completely changed over the past few years. Why do I say that? The Gemstone industry, be it the Traditional style of working in Jaipur, or the Professional Gem Cutting in Germany (Idar), or be it Machine-oriented cutting in China especially for the rounds, the whole Gemstone has changed.

The big category of Colored Gemstones can be divided into two: Semi precious stones and Precious Stones. This blogpost will guide readers about a few things:

  • Difference between Semi precious stones and Precious Stones, with examples of names of Stones.
  • The trend - where it is going and why? Also the future of Semi precious stones.
1) Difference between Semi precious stones and Precious Stones, with examples of names of Stones.

The difference between the two is immense. There is not fixed definition of what is a Semi-Precious and what is a Precious, but somehow all the stones do fall into one of the two categories. Semi precious stones are those gems that are low in value, have better availability, have lower price. The stones that come under this category are: Amethyst, Citrine, Aquamarine (Debatable), Morganite, Tanzanite, Iolite, Garnet, Peridot, Moonstone, Quartz, Chalcedony, Onyx, Opaque stones, Blue Topaz, Sunstone, Lapis, Kunzite and many more.

All these stones are acceptable, but stones like Tanzanite, Iolite, Peridot, Kunzite, Morganite and Aquamarine are debatable right? Yes its impossible to understand the concept behind this, but if we look in the past history, these stones such as Aquamarine were really cheap and abundant, and the classification was done back then, not recently. Even though their values are much much higher than before, they will be still classified as Semi precious stones. Precious stones include: Ruby, Sapphires and Emeralds. These have been long back classified under these, and the same story as Semi precious stones apply for this too. Diamonds are Precious, but have their own category and usually are not classied under Precious stones.

2) The trend - where it is going and why?

The trend is Semi precious stones, definitely. This is because of the increasing prices in Precious stones and there is another big reason behind that. The Chinese. Confused? Wait till the end, it will be all clearly understood. Semi precious category has so many different colored varieties. Just take the color "Blue" for example. There are so many different varities of Blue colored stones under Semi precious stones. Lapis (Intense sea blue with patterns), Sky Blue Topaz, Swiss Blue Topaz, London Blue Topaz, Iolite (Purple-ish dark Blue), Tanzanite (Different shade of Blue), Blue Chalcedony and many more different options under Semi precious. Where as if you are a Precious stone lover, of Blue color, than what options do you have? Blue Sapphire only in different shades. Thats jut boring for people, and this is the biggest reason why people are these days using more Semi precious stones and ofcourse the cost part comes in. Compare a top quality Iolite and a top quality Blue Sapphire. Iolite would be priced at 100$ a carat? Blue Sapphire would be priced at 500$-700$ a carat for something top top quality. This is the price difference that is making people more towards Semi precious gemstones.

Why are prices of top quality Precious stones? The wealthy Chinese dont know anything about Gems, they only want something that is ir-replacable. Thats the only thing they are concerned with. They want something exclusive. Something that only a few people in this world can own, since all these rich Chinese want this, the prices of Top quality Precious stones has shot even higher.

All these reasons and things put together, we can conclude that Semi precious stones have a higher future, for many different types of people. For investors, this is the best thing because People are wanting it more, which means prices of Cheap stones are likely to get higher, (Example: London blue topaz stone has increased in value by 50% in less than 2 months) For Jewellers, Semi precious stones would definitely be on the top of the list, as Gold gets expensive, and Precious gems get really expensive. For Sellers, Semi precious gems will definitely something that everyone would want to sell, as prices increase, margins maybe increases too, and ofcourse cost increases with the high inflation we face in the market these days.

All in all, if you are looking to buy Gemstones, then Wholesale Semi precious stones would definitely should be at the top of the list. If you have 1000 $ to invest, invest it on beautiful pieces of Semi precious gems, and see the returns.
